At the risk of sounding “old” – wtf is wrong with kids these days?! Though I suppose it isn’t exclusive to youths because so many of my own generation are guilty of the same thing. I’m referring to the ‘DGAF’ attitude that seems to be so abundant! It’s on tshirts, phone cases, tote bags, pillows, and painted across the faces of those who sport it.
Before I dive in too deep – let me just say that I understand where it comes from. I get it. You don’t care what others think so you can continue to be who you are and stay true to you without their judgement. “DGAF what they think” … but has it come too far?
I know, I know, if you don’t give a fuck then there’s a far less chance of being hurt because you weren’t really that invested to begin with. So you block out all emotions, paint on your DGAF armor and slink out into the world fully protected. But again … has it come too far?
I get it – I do! It’s an armor that’s far easier to handle than putting yourself out there or getting hurt. It’s the ‘cool’ thing to do. It’s common. It’s unquestioned. You’re actually looked down upon for giving a shit because then you get titled the ‘loser’ or the ‘geek’. (Yes I’m a self-titled geek at times but I wear it with pride so this isn’t an angry rant.)
So here’s what I think about this DGAF society … IT. IS. SO. BORING! It’s so overwhelmingly dull and plain. It’s not cute or sassy – it’s bland. There is no spark, no inspiration, no breath in shell of being. Nothing. It has no pulse!
When did passion become so taboo? Enjoying things and shouting it from the rooftops. What happened to being excited and giving a shit? It can lead to painful situations but it’s so much more fun when you have a connection with your surroundings and the people in your life.
How do you have a relationship or even a friendship with someone who constantly doesn’t give a flying fuck? How can you have a connection with someone who isn’t invested – who isn’t open to sharing an adventure or a spark?
One of my favourite things about people is when they talk about something they love. There is so much passion in them that their whole face lights up and they glow! They are visibly vibrating with excitement and energy. And it’s contagious! Even if you don’t love the same things that they love – that energy is contagious. It’s exciting!
It’s Thanksgiving weekend here in Canada so I’ve started to think about all of the things that I’m grateful for. My passion, my energy, and my unbridled enthusiasm for the things that I adore are some of the things that I’ll never change or apologize for. I’m happy to have them!
So if you’ve ever aggressively flaunted an IDGAF mentality – I dare you to change that, even for a day. Step outside of your shell, take a risk. You don’t have to go over the top but … I dare you to give a fuck.
